The SWEAP team has received a few inquiries over time about using the SWEAP Curriculum as an entrance or exit exam for MSW advanced standing programs and BSW programs, respectively.
The SWEAP Curriculum instrument IS NOT DESIGNED to be an entrance or exit exam. The instrument was designed as a tool of program assessment, not individual student achievement.
The SWEAP Curriculum Instrument is only 59 items, 6-7 questions per competency. An instrument of this length cannot appropriately evaluate a student’s knowledge across the curriculum to determine whether they know enough to graduate from an undergraduate program, or to skip the generalist practice curriculum of a graduate program. Course grades should be the best measure of those achievements.
Programs hoping to determine that a candidate is ready for admission into advanced standing of an MSW program more than 5 years after earning their BSW are, alternatively, encouraged to use an interview that allows for assessment of a student’s response to case scenarios, or skill demonstration.
